Wild Christmas Tree

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!  After yesterday, I am officially in the Christmas spirit.  As you may know, we made the trek out into the Yukon wilderness and managed to wrestle down a scrawny spruce tree to bring home.  I quickly realized, that the trees growing in the Yukon are not very full.  I believe it has something to do with the permafrost and the lack of nutrients.  Nonetheless, we had a great time heading out on a cool, brisk morning and finding a tree that works just fine! I have posted a before and after picture just so you can see the artistic ability of my talented and beautiful girlfriend! She managed to turn a Charlie Brown tree into something a little nicer.

For all of you trying to decide on whether you should get a real tree or a fake tree, I highly recommend the real tree.  The experience of going out into the bush and finding the perfect tree to bring home is worth way more then going to WalMart and buying a fake one.

So, take a look below and let me know what you think about our Christmas tree.  As well, I would love any tips on how to keep this thing alive until Christmas!

  1. I use the same little fake tree every year for the past 15 years. Hopefully you put it into some sort of pot that you can add water too or else have a humidifier that keeps the air moist and spray it daily or use a humidifier spray on it. It looks great.

    1. The fake trees are definitely nice looking and easy to maintain but the fun of getting this live tree plus the smell of nature in the house is priceless. That is a great idea to spray the tree daily. I hadn’t thought of that! Now would be a great time to go and get a spray bottle. Thanks so much for the suggestion!!

  2. We thought the Naked Mole Rat was ugly!

But you’re right, your talented girlfriend transformed it into a thing of beauty.

    Looks terrific!

    1. Hi Lisa,

I really do think you need to pick out your own tree. It is definitely a great experience. I hope it goes just as well for you as it did for me.

      Thanks for the nice compliment!

  3. Thank goodness Margo has an artistic talent because the before picture of your tree makes Charlie Brown’s tree look awfully good.

What a beautiful job you both did. The memories you had going to get the tree is priceless.

Keep it watered everyday (maybe twice if your house is dry). Never let it run out of water and if you add a little bit of sugar to the water it works the same as a tree preservative.

    Good job guys…looks beautiful!

    1. Margo is definitely a miracle worker!

Thanks for the idea of using sugar water. I had never thought of that. We will see if we can keep it alive until the 25th.

  4. Thanks for all the nice comments about the Christmas tree. It sure is amazing what Margo was able to accomplish with a disgraceful looking tree.

The memories of getting our first Christmas tree will last a lifetime. Again, thanks for all the nice comments!

  5. My family has been using the same fake tree for who knows how long, but every year after Thanksgiving, we put it up and decorate it. I Love your tree Nathan. I know it’s early, but I hope you and your girlfriend have a wonderful holiday!

    1. The memories of getting together and decorating the tree will always be there whether it is a real or a fake tree.

Thanks! I hope you and your family have a great holiday as well.
