11 of the Craziest Animal Defense Mechanisms

11. Fulmar

fulmar

Even the name of this bird suggests something fishy. The word fulmar is derived from Old Norse words, fúll meaning foul, and már meaning gull so basically fulmar means foul gull and here’s why. Fulmar chicks have a crazy and smelly defense mechanism that will surprise both predators and/or an unsuspecting passersby.

These chicks may seem cute and fluffy but get close and you are on the receiving end of a bright orange vomit smelling of rotten fish. The unlucky bird of prey who came a little too close will soon find out that the smell won’t come off and the oil in the puke causes their feathers to stick together so they are unable to fly.
