These guys are awesome! Are the little spines you see on the neck there for protection or are they sensors of some kind? I’m surprised no one has ever thought of using them in a horror movie, the’d beat Jason hands down.

That is pretty observant and a great question. To tell you the truth, I am not too sure of the purpose of fleshy projections on the turtles neck. The common snapping turtle also has these wart-like features on their neck as well. Unfortunately, I can’t give you a definite answer as I think this is just the way their skin turns out. They have a rough skin but I am not sure of the purpose.

I will try researching this to see what I can come up with. I will keep you posted if I can find out if these bumps serve a purpose to the survival of the snapping turtle.

Thanks for such an intriguing question!
