"8

Unlike the simple and predictable dog, the cat has always seemed a little more complex and elusive. Let’s face it, cats are downright confusing sometimes. One moment, they are happily purring and playing with you and the next moment they want to eat your face. While I will never pretend to fully understand our feline friends, I will be able to shed light on 7 of their strange behaviours. Hey, it is a start, right?

Without further ado, let’s learn a little something about those confusing cats that we all know and love.

1. Head-Butting You

"Kitty

There is something adorable about your fluffy kitten coming up and head-butting you but why in the world are they doing this?

No, you don’t have a “special” kitten on your hands. In fact, it is your kitty’s way of saying “Hello”. The common kitty head-butt is actually a really good thing and lets you know that they feel safe and protected when you are around.

That’s right, your cat is showing their gratitude towards you because you are an awesome parent. How sweet is that?

2. The Famous Bum Raise

"Photo
Photo from www.icanhascheezeburger.com

Why is it that when you are petting your cat, they tend to put their tail in the air and raise their bum at you?

While it may look a little odd, this is another way that your cat is showing you their appreciation. Like most mammals, cats associated each other by scent, so when your cat raises their bum at you, they are basically giving you the go ahead to confirm that it is them.

Isn’t that nice that your cat is letting you smell their bum? It is completely up to you if you want to take them up on their offer – I won’t judge!

3. Chews on Weird Things

"Cat

Okay, if you have a cat that likes to chew on odd non-food related items then there could actually be a problem that you need to be aware of. Cats that regularly chew hats, slippers, blankets, cables, etc. may have developed a condition called
pica. This condition can be caused by a gastrointestinal issue or by anxiety. Much the same as humans chew on pens or fingernails when they are stressed and anxious, your precious cat may be worked up a little.

Either way, it may be a good idea to bring your favourite pet to the veterinarian if they exhibit this odd chewing behaviour.

4. The Belly Rub Attack

"Belly

We have all seen this. You are petting your precious kitty and they are loving it. Next thing you know your cat is on their back with their tummy exposed. As such, you go and scratch their cute, little tummy.

BIG MISTAKE!

Next thing you know, your cat has gone all Jekyll and Hyde on you and is now attacking your hand.

What the heck happened?

Actually, a couple of things happened. Your cat rolled over and exposed their tummy to you because they trust you – this is a good thing. Although, when you went in for the playful tummy rubs, you betrayed that trust, in your cats eyes. This is the most vulnerable part of your cat and often the scratching of the tummy will trigger a reflex that says attack!

5. The Love of Boxes and Tight Spaces

"Why

If there is a box, a hamper or any other tight place, there is a good chance your cat will be sitting in it.

Why does your cat love tight spaces?

There are a couple of possible reasons but the most likely is it provides a safe, warm place for your kitty. Being confined in a tight space like a box reduces the risk of being attacked from the side. As well, a small, enclosed space like this will provide heat for the kitty.

Safety and warmth. Two things cats love so the box is the perfect environment for them.

Also, remember when you were a kid at Christmas and ended up having more fun with the box than the present itself – well, yeah, cats are like that too.

6. Meows Through the Night

"Why

There is nothing worse then trying to get a good nights sleep yet you have to deal with a wailing banshee in the form of your lovable cat.

Why does your cat cry during the night?

As you know, cats are hunters, so when they have a little bit of excess energy, they will go on the prowl for insects and rodents in your house. Those night cries are typically from elation or frustration depending on their success rate.

If you want to curb the night time howling then you need to drain your cat’s energy during the day with food puzzles or toys that cause them to think.

7. Flipping Out

"Why

When your cat decides to practice their circus routine by doing a bunch of twists, turns and flips in front of you, it can be quite amusing but why are they doing this?

Yep, you guessed it. They are basically acting like a child to get your attention.

Of course, when you make a fuss out of this bizarre behaviour, it reinforces the activity and your cat will continue to perform their circus tricks when it wants your attention.

8. Comes Running When You Are On the Phone

"Cat

Have you ever noticed that your cat always comes looking for attention when you are on the phone?

Your cat is somewhat smart and knows there is nobody else in the house so they assume you are talking to them. As such, they want you to pet them and pay attention to them.

Once again, if you do pet your cat while talking on the phone, they will quickly associate the phone with getting a ton of attention. At least you will always know how to get your cat in the room.
