Being rich and famous certainly has its perks. You get a big house, or a few more houses, more fancy cars, clothes, and fancy everything else. And yes, even fancy pets. Celebrities do have their own tastes in pets. Some may prefer dogs and cats, or even the other usual pets like turtles, hamsters, and birds.

The celebrities we’re listing here own some pretty unusual pet animals. Now, while we don’t condone taking wild animals out of their natural environment or owning endangered animals, it is still interesting to see how the famous live.

1. Kangaroo – Elvis

"kangaroo

Elvis was known to have a liking for animals and this was one of his pets. That’s right, a real, hopping kangaroo. Not a wallaby, but a kangaroo. This wasn’t much of a gift to Elvis but as a harmless prank by his agent Lee Gordon back in 1957. The King of Rock’n’Roll didn’t have a lot of knowledge about kangaroos, and after some unsuccessful attempts to train his new pet, he donated it to the Memphis Zoo.

2. Tiger – Mike Tyson

"mike

The boxing legend owns three Royal Bengal tigers, two of which were white female Bengal tigers named Kenya and Storm, and the other one, a golden colored male named Boris. One of these tigers also made a cameo in the 2009 movie “The Hangover”. Owning pets as exotic as these don’t really come cheap though, as it was said that it cost roughly $4000 to $5000 for maintenance of these tigers. The license alone was hard to acquire and when Mike Tyson wasn’t able to get one, the authorities took these tigers away and sent them to a refuge in Colorado.

3. Lemur – Kirstie Alley

"lemurs

Kirstie Alley is also known for her love of exotic pets, as she owns quite a few lemurs. That’s not all, the lemurs that she has have been around for 30 years! Lemurs have a lifespan of 40 years, but with the care she gives these pets, they might live even longer. It costs around $40,000-$50,000 a year with two people to take care of them full time.

4. Pot Bellied Pig – George Clooney

"pot

Although Amal Alamuddin may have won George Clooney’s heart, there was another one that had his before she came along. A Vietnamese pot bellied pig, which he named Max. Max was originally a gift for his then-partner Kelly Preston back in 1988, but he grew so attached to the pig that they had been inseparable for 18 years until Max’s death in 2006.

5. Chimpanzee – Michael Jackson

"chimpanzee

Even the King of Pop has his own share of exotic pets, and a chimpanzee named Bubbles was one of them. Bubbles was frequently by Michael’s side during the 1980’s, and after living in the Jackson family’s home for a while, Bubbles was soon moved to Michael’s Neverland ranch, where she slept in a crib in Michael’s bedroom. However, as she was growing up, she was soon found to be unsuitable to be a companion animal as she became more aggressive and thus had to part ways with Michael in 2002. The chimpanzee was moved to a training facility before being transferred to the Center for Great Apes. Bubbles saw Michael a few times before he passed away in 2009.

6. Donkey – Reese Witherspoon

"donkeys

Donkeys are just one of the pets this A-lister has. She owns two of them, named Honky and Tonky. However sweet they are, they can also be real noisy as it was reported that the donkeys made so much noise, Reese’s neighbors sent her a complaint letter. Hopefully they aren’t so noisy now that they can hang around with a pony, another pet of Reese’s.

7. Lion – Tippi Hedren

"Hedren

You might have seen her in some movies before. She’s one of Hitchcock’s icy blonde leading ladies, starring alongside then-James Bond Sean Connery in “Marnie” and in another one of Hitchock’s most disturbing movies to date, called “The Birds” back in the 60’s. She also had an exotic pet of her own, a lion called Neil.

As you may have guessed, captive wild animals don’t make good pets as they grow into adults, and due to the complaints of the neighbors and even after a few scratches and bites here and there, Tippi decided that animals like these should not be kept as pets. Therefore she founded the Shamble Preserve in 1983, a sanctuary to protect wild animals from abuse or neglect.

8. Anteater – Salvador Dali

"anteater

One of the most famous surrealist artists, it’s no surprise that Salvador Dali himself would get a surreal pet. An anteater, to be exact. He suddenly had this liking for anteaters, and it is said that it was because he hated ants since he found them trying to feast on his dead pet bat’s body.

Ants do seem to be really annoying at times, but enough to get an anteater as a pet?!?

9. Cheetah – Josephine Baker

"cheetah

For those of you who don’t know who she is, Josephine Baker is one of the icons of the Jazz Age back in the 20’s. France also became her second home and there, she was called “La Baker”. Apart from her successful career, her personal life is quite unusual, especially with her choice of travel companion or pet. She owned a cheetah in which she named Chiquita, who was originally just part of her act during a show; however, Josephine had grown attached to her and eventually took her in, even riding in her car and sleeping with her on her bed.

10. Deer – Audrey Hepburn

"fawn

Another Hollywood icon with another unusual pet, which seemed to suit her so well too. This icon of elegance first came upon her soon-to-be companion while starting production for the film Green Mansions. Audrey was going to be filming with some fawns and so her then-husband and also the director of the picture, Mel Ferrer, advised her to take one of the fawns home in order for her to get accustomed to it. It wasn’t long before they had grown so attached to each other that Audrey would sometimes take Pippen out grocery shopping.

11. Wolf-Dog – Kristen Stewart

"wolf

A wolf-dog is a hybrid between, well, a wolf and a dog, also the oldest male among many wolf and dog hybrids, and only legal in a few states in the USA. Kristen and her mother have been raising Jack for years, however, Kristen doesn’t think it is advisable to own a wolf-dog due to their moodiness which makes them hard to take care of.
