Snakes are usually associated with bad things when it comes to literature – the snake that tempted Adam and Eve to bite into the apple, the basilisk that petrifies people in the Chamber of Secrets, the evil anaconda that swallows people whole. While there are snakes that are mostly harmless, a.k.a the ones we see in the zoos, there are also snakes that we should never, ever, go near. A word of caution to those who happen to come across any of the snakes here: Try not to bother them, they may end your life. Or at least send you to the hospital if you do.

1. Belcher’s Sea Snake

"belcher's

Now, sea snakes, in general although they can be venomous, they are pretty harmless IF they aren’t threatened. However, the Belcher’s sea snake, well, is one of the most venomous in the world. Just a few milligrams of their venom can immediately kill a thousand people. So, it’s best to stay away from these.

2. Black Mamba

"Black-Mamba"

Or black-mouthed mamba is another one of the most venomous snakes in the world. There’s a reason why Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill was codenamed Black Mamba after all. Apart from being one of the most dangerous, it’s also one of the fastest moving too. The venom of the Black Mamba is made up of neurotoxins, mostly dendrotoxins, that can make humans collapse in 45 minutes, and without antivenom, a human can die within 7 to 15 hours. But, despite it being known to be a very aggressive snake, it usually tries to flee from humans whenever it’s threatened or cornered.

3. Rattlesnake

"Rattle-Snake"

One of most famous and most dangerous snakes in the world would of course be the rattlesnake. It’s easy to tell when a rattlesnake is close by because of the sound they make, thus the name. It is common in the Americas, and they are the primary cause of snakebite injuries in North America. If treated right away, a rattlesnake bite is very rarely fatal. However, if left alone, the venom of the rattlesnake can inflict damage to organs, prevent blood clotting which can result to paralysis, severe bleeding, and breathing problems.

4. Barba Amarilla

"barba

Found in the northern parts of South America and the east of the Andes, the Barba Amarilla’s venom ranges from mild to fatal or painful, depending on the type of Barba Amarilla that bites. In this case, the Barba Amarilla in Latin America is painful, necrotizing, and deadly.

5. Death Adder

"death

The adder is known for being the snake that Cleopatra was said to have killed herself with. Death adders are found in Australia, New Guinea, and the islands near it. They look similar to vipers, except for the size that would be evident among the real vipers. Only 40-100 milligrams of their venom are enough to paralyze but will result in death within 6 hours due to breathing problems.

6. Boomslang

"boomslang"

Snake bites are often a one shot kill, some bite a few times to kill their prey, but this snake? Lets just say that death is slow and just pure torture. The boomslang is commonly found south of the Sahara desert in Africa. The fangs of this snake are located at the back, and the venom it injects disables blood clotting. The symptoms don’t appear until hours later, which can sometimes mislead people into thinking that it wasn’t a fatal bite. Still, it might be good to stay away from these.

7. Inland Taipan

"inland

This snake, found in parts of Australia, is another one you wouldn’t want to cross. In fact, this snake is THE snake that you don’t want to see because this is also the most venomous snake in the world. A single drop of its venom has been proven fatal, and oh, it’s venom is specially adapted to kill warm-blooded animals.

8. Eastern Tiger Snake

"eastern

Similar to the cobras found in Asia and in Africa, the eastern tiger snake in Australia and in the islands nearby, prepares to attack by flattening it’s head as well as its neck. This is also the widely spread type of tiger snake, among the many types.

9. Eastern Brown Snake

"eastern

Another venomous snake that is found in Australia as well as Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the eastern brown snake, or the brown snake, is the second most venomous snake in the world, and also one of the most aggressive. It can even go after someone or something if they think they are a threat. While they’re not one to bite, they will if they have to, over and over again.

10. Saw-Scaled Viper

"saw

Found in Central Asia as well as the Middle East, the saw-scaled viper is one of the four snakes (and the smallest among the four) who are responsible for the most deaths by snakebite. Only 5 milligrams of its venom is enough to kill a human.

11. Blue Krait

"blue

Also known as the Malayan krait, is a dangerous snake that is native to Southeast Asia, particularly in the southern Indochina, Java and Bali. The venom of the blue krait is 50% fatal even after it is treated with the antivenom, but its fatality goes up to 70% when left alone in humans.

12. Banded Krait

"banded

Just like its fellow krait in the previous number, the banded krait is also found in Southeast Asia as well as the subcontinent of India, and is one of the largest kraits as well. This nocturnal reptile is, obviously, more dangerous at night, however, to humans, envenomation is still relatively low when it bites as a defense mechanism, and it rarely also comes across humans as well. But, better safe than sorry, after all.

13. Philippine Cobra

"philippine

As its name implies, the Philippine cobra is native to the northern region of the Philippines, and is also considered to be one of the very venomous species of spitting cobra. The venom of the Philippine cobra can cause difficulties in breathing, which is also quite lethal if not treated right away.

14. King Cobra

"king

And onto another kind of cobra, this time, one of the most regal of them all. The king cobra. This snake is found in Southeast Asia and in the forests of India. The king cobra is the longest venomous snake, with a length measuring up to 18.5 to 18.7 feet long. One bite from a king cobra is enough to inject 200 to 500 milligrams of venom, the toxins of which affect the central nervous system, causing paralysis, and later on, death via respiratory failure.

15. Coastal Taipan

"coastal-taipan"

We’ve already mentioned the inland taipan, but this time, this is another kind of taipan. The coastal taipan is commonly found in the northern and eastern regions of Australia, and in Papua New Guinea. The coastal taipan, like it’s relative, is another one of the most venomous land snakes in the world.

16. Dubois Sea Snake

"dubois

Onto another sea snake, the Dubois sea snake is commonly found in Papua New Guinea, the northern, eastern, and western coastal areas of Australia. This snake is not that aggressive, but they will bite you if they are provoked. The Dubois sea snake is also one of the three most venomous in the world.

17. Yellow Bellied Sea Snake

"Yellow

It gets its name from its yellow underside, the yellow bellied sea snake is another snake that you wouldn’t want to come across. This snake is found in the tropical oceanic waters, except the Atlantic. Like most of the snakes mentioned, its venom is very potent, and can cause muscle damage when left untreated.

18. Many-Banded Krait

"many

Found in the central and southern parts of China as well as in Southeast Asia, the many-banded krait is another dangerous reptile you’d want to steer clear of. It is also nocturnal, thus being more dangerous when encountered at night.

19. Indian Cobra

"Indiancobra"

While it is a snake that is moderately venomous, its venom acts fast, and we mean fast. Found in parts of Pakistan and in India, the Indian cobra is also a snake that is responsible for most of the deaths by snakebite in South Asia.

20. Russell’s Viper

"russells

Another one of the snakes that are responsible for most of the deaths via snakebite and non-fatal bites, particularly in India. Russell’s viper is also one of the most aggressive, and delivers a very painful bite, resulting in internal bleeding, blistering, bruising, and even necrosis.

21. Bothrops Asper

"Bothrops_asper"

Also known as Terciopelo, the bothrops asper is commonly found in southern Mexico to the northern parts of South America. They often move very fast, and are sometimes referred to as the “Ultimate pit viper”. The bothrops asper is also considered very dangerous mostly among humans, as it inhabits places where humans are nearby.
